We began 2016 with a high degree of uncertainty regarding the direction of the markets, particularly in relation to the interest rates in the United States, and the trends in other large economies, such as Asia and Europe. However, as the year progressed, the international business environment improved, due to the continuing economic growth in China and the increases in metal prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME). The spot price of zinc increased by 65% year-over-year, and closed 2016 at US $ 2,563 per metric ton. The average price of zinc for the year was US$ 2,095 per ton, 9% higher than the average for 2015. In the case of copper, despite an increase in the spot price of 18% year-over-year, the average price for the year was US$ 5,501 per metric ton, 12% lower than the average for 2015.
